There is a lot to love about Lowell
Incorporated in 1826, Lowell began as a Mill town, and is the 4th largest city in Massachusetts.
It was the first planned industrial city in the United States, and thrived as its textile industry wove cotton produced in the South and parachutes for the military during WWII.
Many of the original mills have been converted into office space, condominiums and artist lofts while others were preserved by the National Park Service.
The Canals in Lowell are a scenic and historic centerpiece of the city. Fed from the Merrimack river, the canals were the largest power canal system in the US and are preserved and maintained as a part of the Lowell National Historic Park.
Lowell is a college town as well. Home to the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and Middlesex Community College. The UMass Lowell campus is a thriving community offering concerts and sporting events during the academic year.
Culture
An old stomping ground of the founder of the “Beat Generation”, Jack Kerouc, Lowell is home to over a dozen art galleries, studios and museums including The Boott Cotton Mills Museum, the National Streetcar Museum, The New England Quilt Museum and the Kerouac Park. Lowell is host to the nation’s largest free folk festival, The Lowell Folk Festival held annually in August. It is also home of two minor league sports teams: The Lowell Spinners (baseball) and the Lowell Devils (Hockey).
