Dracut is the only town in the world with the name Dracut.
Incorporated in 1701, Dracut was separated from the town of Chelmsford. Prior to that it was known as “Augumtoocooke” settled by Pennacook Native Americans. In the mid 16th - 17th Century, the area was led by the well known and respected Sachem Passaconoway.
Dracut is the largest town that is governed by an open Town Meeting, 5 member Board of Selectmen with a Town Manager. The population is roughly 30,000. To the north it borders New Hampshire.
Dracut values its rich history by preserving its agricultural and open spaces. Beaver Brook, which passes through Dracut, is a tributary of the Merrimack River. Dracut has preserved the 200 + year old Colburn House which hosts the town’s annual craft fair.
